Properties of Tournaments among Well-Matched Players

چکیده
1. TOURNAMENTS. In an n-player round robin tournament, each player plays one match against each of the other n 1 players. The win-loss outcomes of these matches can be conveniently recorded in a tournament matrix A = [aij] as follows: First label the players in any order as 1, 2,.. ., n. For each pair i and j, set ai1 = 1 if player i defeats player j, and set aij = 0 otherwise. If i j , then exactly one of aij and aji is nonzero; when i = j, aii = 0. What properties of the matrix A are related to the strengths of the players? The simplest measure of strength is the number of matches that the player wins, and the row sums of A count the number of matches won by each player. We are interested in understanding tournaments among players who are well matched in the sense that each player wins about half of the matches played. If the number of players is odd, many properties of A are very well understood. If the number of players is even, however, the properties of A are far less well understood. Indeed, there are many easily stated questions that lead to hard, open problems. Some of these problems are the focus of this paper. We let I denote the identity matrix, we let J denote the square matrix all of whose entries are ones, and we let e denote the column vector whose entries are all ones. A matrix A whose entries are zeros and ones is a tournament matrix exactly when

Optimal seeding in knockout tournaments
Optimal seeding in balanced knockout tournaments has only been studied in very limited settings, for example, maximizing predictive power for up to 8 players using only the relative ranking of the players (ordinal information). We broaden the scope of the analysis along several dimensions: tournaments of size up to 128, different player models, ordinal as well as cardinal solutions, and two add...

Background : Sound pollution has unwarranted effects on hearing loss. Despite numerous prior studies on sound pollution and its effects in industrial environments, scanty studies are available among musicians. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the association between musical instruments noise and hearing loss. Material and method : For this prospective study, 50 professional players o...
متن کاملStrategic Tournaments
A tournament is a simultaneous n-player game built on top of a symmetric two-player game G. Each player chooses one action in G and is matched to play G against each of the other n − 1 players. His score in each match is his G-payoff. The winner of the tournament is the player who achieves the highest total score (ties are broken randomly). The tournament has several interpretations as an evolu...

Prize and Risk-Taking Strategy in Tournaments: Evidence from Professional Poker Players This study examines whether people optimally respond to prize incentives for risk taking in tournaments. I exploit the television game show World Poker Tour as a natural experiment. The results show that professional players strategically choose the degree of risk taking depending on the incentives implied b...
